Here, on the Mosier bluff over the Columbia River, a fawn
By Penelope Scambly Schott
Written en plein air on Mosier Plateau, Mosier, Oregon
The fawn
sproings
on four
new legs
all
off the
ground
at once.
The fawn
doesn’t
notice
the tall
white tug
pushing
barges
of wheat
down river
on the way
to China.
Below us,
a toy
freight train
travels
the edge
of the
gorge,
while distant
trucks
trouble
the highway.
The bouncing fawn hears only wind in the high pines.
