Wind: The Soul of the Gorge
A"juried" art show featuring artists throughout the Gorge

Columbia Center for the Arts

This is a month-long show that opens Friday, July 7, at the Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River. Expect to see unusual art in a variety of media, focused on artist interpretations of wind in the Gorge. For more information, click here.

A musical review

The music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, America's greatest living music theatre composer, will be featured in an upcoming revue called "Side by Side by Sondheim," opening at the new CAST theatre on July 21.

River of Memory: The Everlasting Columbia

Multi-media presentation by author William Layman

Columbia Center for the Arts


Join author William Layman as he delivers a presentation about his extraordinary book, River of Memory: The Everlasting Columbia.

River of Memory honors a place and time now gone from view. It restores an unfettered Columbia through more than ninety historical photographs that capture the river as it once appeared. Layman’s remarks will focus on the evolution of the River of Memory project, stories regarding the river and its historical photographs, poets and poetry that celebrate the river, and on all the fish that swim its waters. Layman will be introduced by Brent Foster, Executive Director, Columbia Riverkeeper.

River of Memory is dedicated to Salmon who have nourished land and people, and to all indigenous bands, tribes and nations who have drawn strength from the river.
Art Festivals


The Trout Lake Festival of the Arts


A weekend of art and music takes place in the beautiful Trout Lake Valley, beneath Mt. Adams. Events include a juried show of 40 Gorge artists, two stages of live music, a children's art and music program, local wines, brews, and fine foods. Join the fun!

Nights in White Salmon

Join the fun at the 2nd Annual Nights in White Salmon Art & Wine Fusion, in downtown White Salmon on Saturday evening, July 15th from 5 to 9 p.m. Local wineries will feature wine tasting at various locations in the downtown area, and local artists will be featuring their art. Get your "passport" stamped as you visit each participating location, and be eligible to win a prize!

Red Fish Gallery has Moved

Red Fish Gallery, formerly in Stevensen, WA, has moved to Bingen, WA. Redfish is now located at 415 W. Stueben. Check it out. Call Regina for directions or information, at 509-493-2583.

Evlory Dearing at A-Salon in Hood River
Evlory Dearing will be showing her paintings during the month of July at A-Salon, on Oak Street in Hood River. Evlory will be donating 30% of anything she makes selling her paintings, to the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River. Her work is primarily abstractions of figures and landscapes.

Sorcha Meek at Maryhill
Sorch Meek of Solo studio and gallery, will be showing four of the images in her "Facing Change" series at the Maryhill Museum of Art until July 31, 2006. Check her out on her website at www.sorchameek.com

Pacific Northwest Plein Air Competition
The Columbia Center for the Arts

Call for Entries
Pacific Northwest artists will paint the scenic and diverse landscape of the Columbia River Gorge. Mountains, rivers, trees, high desert, picturesque farms, orchards and culture of the Columbia River Gorge en plen air in late summer.

Awards
1st, 2nd, 3rd place and Best of Studio awards will be given.

Call for Artists
The Dalles Art Center

"Gorge Artists Create," the annual juried show of The Dalles Art Center is soliciting entries. Works in all media and on any topic are being accepted. Works must have been created within the past two years.

Awards
1st, 2nd, 3rd place ( $100, $75, and $50) and People's Choice awards will be given.

When:

Show runs: Aug 1 through Sept 2
Work to be deliverd: July 25 - 29

Cost: $5 entry fee (Limit of 3 works per artist)

Models Needed
Columbia Center for the Arts

Columbia Center for the Arts is sponsoring a drawing/painting session, which is not a class, but an opportunity for artists to draw and paint from live models. The Center is looking for volunteers willing to donate their time for three hour-sessions. Models will be clothed or costumed. Models of all ethnicities and ages are welcome.

Pastel Art: Landscapes: Painting with Passion
The Dalles Art Center

Susan Ogilvie, a nationally recognized pastel artist is teaching a three-day class for experienced artists who want to move beyond a literal sense of landscape. The emphasis is on establishing a more personal approach to "seeing" a landscape, that will result in a more dynamic, sensitive and personal statement.

Papermaking with Native Fibers
The Dalles Art Center

Papermaker Marilyn Wold will be teaching how to make beautiful, textural papers from plants grown in the Gorge. You'll learn how to recognize, gather and process native plant fibers, and you'll make sheets of translucent paper which you can use to send messages or as the basis of an art project.
