Once Upon the River ...
In a time long before windsurfers & 400' barges, 3 types of vessels dominated the Columbia River: the sailing schooner, the river sternwheeler, and the Northwest Indian's Kwakiutl canoe. Each had its own history, & each its own staunch followers.
In 1987, a group of modern enthusiasts, mad for either boats, racing,
history, or yet another sporting challenge, decided a competition was
called for, and so, starting east at the Bridge of the Gods in Cascade
Locks, the Hood River Navy sailed, steamed and rowed its famous race
on the Columbia River.
This will be the only film showing of the 1987 race between the 3 vessels
of the Hood River Navy: the 1890 schooner "Sara", the "Columbia River Sternwheeler", and a
full scale 51-foot replica of a Kwakiutl canoe. The film, helicopter footage lost for 22 years, will be shown one night only with the principals
involved with each of the 3 vessels there in person at the Columbia Center for the Arts theater to present their
team's battle & to answer questions.
