Summer with Monika

An Ingmar Bergman Film

September 22, 2010

The Pod

Summer with Monika is the second in a series of Ingmar Bergman films to be shown at Columbia Center for the Arts over the upcoming months.

An introduction to the film will be given by Daniel McCabe, MD, a psychiatrist at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.

Summer with Monika, released in 1953, is one of Ingmar Bergman's early films.

The film is set during the long summer days around the Swedish archipelago, and follows two young people, Harry and Monika, as they rebel against adult society and explore the idyllic islands and each other.

The film was considered very risqué at the time of its release, and was marketed as such, especially in the United States.

Second in a Series of Ingmar Bergman Films

This presentation is the second of a Bergman series of films to be shown at the Columbia Center for the Arts. The series presents films in chronological order from different periods of Bergman’s filmmaking career.

The presentations will give the audience an opportunity to explore Bergman's development not only as a filmmaker, but also as a human being — as the topics he deals with in his films reflect experiences he was having in his personal life.
