2011 Spring Humanities Series
April 13, 20, 27. and May 4
Brought to You by Columbia Gorge Community College
Truth In Media
The 2011 Series will address Truth in Media, and engage representatives from print and television media, as well as the expanding area of social networks. The Series will explore the evolution of the citizen journalist and how the growth in non-traditional media will play a part in future delivery of information and debate.
Issues to be explored include ...
- What is public opinion regarding on-line journalism, YouTube videos, and interactive news?
- How has and will the advent of these forms affect professional or traditional journalism?
- Do the ethical guidelines that exist for professionals apply to citizen journalists? If not, should they?
- Can competition for readers/viewers in a more free form media environment compromise integrity of news content? We are regularly told by news organizations that “we have the right to know.” But do we?
- Where do we stand on Wikileaks?
As we watch and read about the current efforts to dismantle long-standing governments/regimes, we are being witnesses to the potential power of media in all its forms. In all, we believe this to be a relevant and timely issue for any community. Information is coming at us in varied formats and via multiple platforms. Information is everywhere. Is truth or accuracy everywhere?
