Nch'i-Wana

Nch'i-Wana is a Native American Word for Big River, now known as the Columbia River.

A Celebration!

Nch'i-Wana 2007 celebrates the works of contemporary Native American artists whose ancestry is tied to the Big River and its tributaries —and whose art reflects their heritage, philosophies, spirituality, and/or current conditions.

Celebrating the Then and Now

For over 12,000 years, the Big River was central to Native culture. It provided salmon for food and trade, and formed the backbone for one of the most important trade networks in all of Native America.

For thousands of years, the Big River was a magnet for commerce and inter-tribal social getherings.

Nothing was more important to the lives and cultures of the people living along it or near it, than the River itself.

It remains so to this day.

The Show and Events

Nch'i-Wana 2007 is an opportunity to learn more about the rich tapestry of life and experience that has been, and continues to be, defined by the Big River.

Contemporary Native American artists, along with a host of special guests, speakers, and performers, will be sharing their point of view, their thoughts and feelings, and their experiences.
