Talking With

10 Women ... 10 Monologues

Talking With, by Jane Martin, is a CAST production being directed by Glenn Harris along with assistant director Marti Kantola. The play is a study of love, loneliness and obsession mixed liberally with humor.

The play opens on October 8, 2009 and runs through October 17.

About the Play

The play consistes of ten potent monologues by ten fascinating women who have bought into the American Dream and now find themselves set apart from it and ostracized to some degree. Each woman finds a way to cope with what could be an intolerable situation, and comes up with a unique understanding of her place in the greater scheme of things. Musical interludes between monologues are provided by Bill Weiler.

Not Just for Women

Talking With has always had a special fascination, because few people know for sure who wrote it or if the writer, Jane Martin, is really a woman. It doesn’t matter, because it’s not really a “woman’s play.” It is ultimately about life and how one chooses to live it.

Monologues

They talk about life and death, aging and childbirth, strength and vulnerability, faith and emptiness. They make you laugh, but most important, they make you think. They include:

  • A young woman who tests her Christian faith by handling poisonous snakes
  • A young “stressed out” auditioning actress who threatens murder if she doesn't get the part
  • A woman in her thirties who recently lost her mother
  • An elderly and destitute woman who aspires to live in a McDonald’s restaurant (where the sick are cured by Big Macs and no one ever dies)
  • A housewife who escapes to OZ every day
  • A rodeo rider who complains of being displaced by the “showgirl” type of rodeo performers.
