About the Play
“Suspenseful, riveting … achieves a universality that is movingly personal” (The New York Times)
Ariel Dorfman’s psychological thriller explores retribution and forgiveness on both the personal and political level. It is a moral thriller about a woman, Paulina, who believes that a stranger who comes to her home is the doctor who, under a military dictatorship, tortured her many years before.
This explosively provocative, Pulitzer prize, award winning drama is set in a county that has only recently returned to democracy.
Gerardo Escobar has just been chosen to head the commission that will investigate the crimes of the old regime when his car breaks down and he is picked up by Roberto Miranda. But in the voice of this good Samaritan, Gerardo’s wife, Paulina Salas, thinks she recognizes another man – the one who tortured her as she lay blindfolded in a military detention center years before.
“People can die from an excessive dose of the truth!" says Gerardo Escobar to his wife Paulina, who demands to bring her torturer to justice in Ariel Dorfman’s morality play, Death and the Maiden.”
The line is rich in confounding paradoxes – reflecting the literal reality of those put to death for speaking the truth, as well as the collective denial that often surrounds situations of unspeakable brutality and dehumanization.
The playwright ponders how justice can be truly served by officials bogged
down in corruption and self gain. Yet does vigilante justice promote
a never-ending cycle of tyranny?
