Hood River StorySlam

Hood River StorySlam

October 13, 7pm
Hosted by Leigh Hancock
Open to the Community

Join us for Hood River’s first ever StorySlam! Experience an evening of short personal narratives told with flair and passion.  Be brave and put your name in the hat for a chance to tell your own personal story on stage.   We will draw up to 10 names from the hat and have local judges casting their votes. Tellers will be expected to tell a six-minute, true, personal story around the theme A THOUSAND WORDS in conjunction with our October Exhibition and programming, A Thousand Words: Visual Arts Responses to Literature.

Here are the rules:

  1. Your story must a true personal narrative.
  2. It must be told in six minutes or less.
  3. Adult content is OK as long as it is not disrespectful to any person or group.
  4. Ages 17 and over please.
  5. Fee to attend and/or participate in the SLAM is $8.
  6. Arrive by 6:30pm to fill out a form if you would like to put your name in the hat.
  7. Prizes for first and second place tellers.

Tickets are just $8 for all ages. Purchase tickets online below, in the Columbia Arts Gallery at 215 Cascade in Hood River, or at Waucoma Bookstore. Please note that tickets are non-refundable, except in the event of cancellation.

SLAM Drop-in Workshop:

Join storyteller Leigh Hancock at the Hood River County Library for a lively workshop full of tips and strategies for making your story as engaging and powerful as possible—while staying in that 5-6 minute Story Slam range! No experience necessary— all you need is a story idea (no written work, please!) and willingness to dive into a collaborative, creative process. This free workshop is held in the Library on Tuesday, October 10 from 5:30-7:30pm.

Leigh Hancock has spent her whole life working with stories—as a writer, teacher and, most recently, professional storyteller.  She has performed in the Gorge, Portland, Kansas City and even Kobe, Japan (to a rapt group of second graders!). Leigh conducts storytelling workshops in schools, libraries, art centers and corporations, all based on her belief that every person has a story that deserves to be told.
