Kristie Strasen’s handwoven work here follows one of two themes. The “Ebb & Flow Series” explores water sources that contribute to our vast system of rivers and streams. Graphic shapes in unexpected colors have been used as symbolic representations of these resources we often take for granted.

The “Oceans & Seas Series” explores – in abstract map form – bodies of water that have resonated in Kristie’s life. The locations are idiosyncratic to her and her experiences and are how she imagines these places in her mind’s eye.

All weavings are approximately 11″ x 11″ + fringe and suspension cord.

about the artist

Kristie Strasen has a passion for color and textiles that has contributed to a successful career in textile design and color consulting. Living in New York City for over 35 years, Strasen’s expertise in color has been invaluable in the development of color palettes for leading firms throughout the US and Canada, as well as Europe, Turkey and Australia.

Originally from the Northwest, Strasen established her consulting firm in New York City in 1986. In 2017 she moved to the Columbia River Gorge and settled in White Salmon where she continues her design and color consulting.

Strasen was trained as a hand weaver and studied textiles in the San Francisco Bay area during the explosion of textiles as art form in the ‘70’s. With her move to White Salmon, she has re-engaged with her love of weaving and has launched LittleWeavingsCo which specializes in artisanal handwoven textiles for the home.

Strasen thinks of her weavings as “woven stories” and tells these stories using beautifully colored and textured yarns. The weavings create a narrative evoking memories, dreams, and subliminal impressions. Fascinated by maps and charts, Strasen’s “little weavings” often relate to a particular place. Working in wool and linen, Strasen’s weavings are intended as small punctuations to adorn an otherwise unnoticed corner – or to illicit a smile when the viewer discovers one unexpectedly.

Strasen lives in White Salmon, Washington with her dog Vinnie and her cat Raffi. She regularly accepts commissions for both wall hangings and pillows.
