SFMOMA

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Recently I took a trip to San Francisco and spent much of the time checking out the art galleries. The newly (2016) remodeled San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a wonder to behold, with so many floors and rooms full of the most stunning modern art. The SFMOMA collection is one of the best in the western US, and the newly refurbished space is big, and roomy—giving the museum an abundance of space to exhibition and the visitor an abundance of space and room to move and explore.

The featured exhibition when were there was Matisse/Diebenkorn, with seven large rooms filled with side-by-side works of art by the two artists. Portland, Oregon born artist Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) is quoted throughout the exhibition, describing the startling and life-long effect the French artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954) had on Diebenkorn’s art and style. The exquisite exhibition shows off to great advantage the beautiful and rich environment the updated Museum has to offer.

For paintings and sculptures, SFMOMA’s areas of concentration include “Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism in France; Modernism in the United States and Latin America; American Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Pop art; postwar German art; and contemporary art from around the globe. As the first museum on the West Coast dedicated to modern and contemporary art, a large part of our collection focuses on artists from California, and particularly the Bay Area.”

You’ll also find an Alexander Calder mobile and sculpture room with an adjoining outdoor balcony space, works of architecture and design, media arts, and expanded works of photography.

We spent 8 hours in at SFMOMA—we just couldn’t bring ourselves to leave when there was so much great art to see! Thankfully, they also have a great coffee shop and dessert bar. And while you’re enjoying a snack you can scroll through screens of images from their photo archives.

SFMOMA is a real treasure for art lovers. It’s worth a trip to San Francisco—and plan to spend a few hours (or a couple of days) so you get to experience the full breath of this art oasis.

ONE MORE THING: Here’s a fun way to see some of the archives of art at SFMOMA on your phone. Simply text 572-51 and put in a mood or color and SFMOMA will text you back an image with info about the piece of art. It’s lots of fun!
