In partnership with Arts in Education of the Gorge, this summer Columbia Center for the Arts (CCA) is providing both visual arts and theatre summer camps for youth ages 4-18 to engage and empower them in the creative process where young people will explore their natural creative gifts and learn new techniques to build confidence and skills.
All supplies are provided, some scholarships are provided to support maximum engagement! Please bring your own snacks.
Safety and Precautions
Safety first! Physical distancing will be implemented, we are following the State guidelines from the Oregon Health Authority to guide us in our decisions and health precautions, here is the link to our Summer Camp Protocols with COVID
We are limiting our class sizes to 10 students, where our teaching artists will give an amazing experience to the youth who can participate, we will do everything we can to keep everyone healthy. We do plan to keep kids at least 6′ apart, and have measured out our spaces to practice safety, and each participant will have a private container for their materials. If youth or family are showing any signs of illness we will ask them to stay home. We will take the temperature of participants at the beginning of class and encourage masks. We also ask participants to bring their own snacks for safety and health precautions. Thanks for understanding and working with us to keep everyone safe and healthy!
Theatre Summer Camps
Aug 3 – 6 – Theatre-Character Development & Performance with Katrina Zavalney (ages 5-15)- (Morning still available)
In this camp join us for a week of activities that help build confidence and connection, as well as develop skills in voice, movement, focus, character building, improvisation, miming and story-telling. Focus will be on character development and performance skills.
Visual Arts Summer Camps
July 27 – 30 – Skateboard Art with Michelle Yamamoto (ages 8-18) – SOLD OUT
Inviting all skateboarders and art lovers who want to paint their own 8.5 California made skate deck, perfect for riding the park and bowls. Students will be introduced to the concepts of composition and will be taking their drawing and painting skills to the next level. Content rich art demonstrations will be provided by their teacher, a muralist, exhibiting artist at both 301 gallery and Columbia Centre for the Arts.
Aug 10 -13 – Design your own comic strip with Michelle Yamamoto (ages 8-18)
The week will start with a cool slide show to cover a little history of comics and how they are made. From Superheroes to funny, goofball characters, the artist’s comic strip concept will start with thumbnail sketches to develop your characters, then write a meaningful story line and lay out the sequence of the images on panel borders with speech balloons. Finishing touches with fine point markers for painting your lines and color. Great for young artists who already know how to draft a figure and face as capturing emotions of their characters will be explored and developed. Comics are such a great way to encourage reading, writing and storytelling, and to work on all the skills needed to be a successful reader and writer. Plus they are loads of fun!
